Hi

My Son is six years old and has just been diagnosed with epilepsy and last year was diagnosed with ADHD. He has just been medicated for epilepsy and one doctor wants to medicate for both the other said get the seizure medication right first and then see if stimulants are needed. I'd rather wait and see the effects of the seizure medication.  Does anyone think their epilepsy effects their behaviour or ADHD? Has anyone else had similar experiences or could offer some advice how how to deal with both conditions it would be much appreciated.

Regards

Di

hi di, my daughter has adhd and epilepsy. She is 11 yrs old now. She had her first seizure when she was 3 and it was simply heartwrenching. She is my youngest daughter and it was our 1st time to encounter such a thing. I had 0% knowledge about epilepsy. So then her doctor prescribed trileptal which made her groggy. she has adhd but i decided not to have her medicated. What i did was to adjust to what was her comfort level. All she needed was tender loving care. You could say it was some kind of personal approach. Okay here is the thing, i did a lot of research and i dont know if i just got lucky but i lowered her dosage little by little. And now its been 2 yrs since her last medication. And of course since stress is what triggers her attack then i try to controll that at all cost. She has learned to live with her disorder. She has learned to cope with it. I know i wont be with her forever and i cant always be with her 24/7 teaching her to be independent is our main goal. hi di, my daughter has adhd and epilepsy. She is 11 yrs old now. Hi Anne lee thankyou for reply I agree stress is a big factor in it all.  We are continually working on strategies to reduce stress. I wish you all the best with your family its great to hear that your daughter is doing so well.
hi di, thank you. hope you find something that would work with your little one. It took years before we made progress, one baby step at a time. Dont forget "tender loving care" is what your little one needs. Never ever lose hope. Best of luck

Di, I have a very good friend who's son has adhd and a seizure disorder. I have sent her an invite to this site, but if you would like I could put you in direct contact with her. Please let me know if I can help you with this. Her son is 14 or 15 so she has been dealing with this for a while.

Di ~ Sorry for the late reply. I'm new to this site. This doesn't apply to my child, but it applies to me. I have both ADHD and epilepsy. I have been medicated for my epilepsy for 13 years, and have only been medicated for my ADHD since September. The epilepsy has been a part of my life for such a long time, I don't remember life without it. The seizure medication that I am on is also a mood stabilizer, so it helps calm me down. It doesn't really do anything to change my ADHD behavior, though. ~ Christy
