I was reading a webcomic today and one of the characters said "risk focuses the mind." I have not heard this before but it makes sense. People tend to be more alert in potentially dangerous situations. So maybe it is something people do be more alert.

Risk seekers might not see at as making them feel more alert, but notice that it makes them feel good.

If you do what others won't you can have what others can't.

I disagree their is a finish line lets just hope we don't get to it anytime soon. The rest of your statement I agree with. You have to have fun in order to enjoy life. That's why I work for myself which has caused my stress level to drop drastically lately. It's amazing what we can accomplish. Then our reputation will get more business.

Don't think I already commented on this...apologies if I did, I'm at work so I'm trying to respond quickly without flipping back through the other pages...

Just wanted to comment on hyperactivity. This is another area where even for adults there are stereotypes I think. We get this picture of the ADHD risk-taker for whom risk-taking means jumping out of airplanes and rock-climbing and being physically adventurous. But there are many ways to be impulsive, and take risks and be hyperactive that don't involve those kind of risks. My mental health peeps DEFINITELY agree that I have hyperactivity and yes, sometimes that involves my body, and a lot of fidgeting, or being uncomfortable waiting for appointments or other things, or having to get up and go for a walk during classes, or at work. However, I am TERRIFIED of physically risky activities.

For me, the much BIGGER issue is mental hyperactivity. This is the killer for me. And no, it's not the same as impulsivity. Impulsivity is what drives me to action...hyperactivity to me is about constant motion, and my MIND is in CONSTANT motion. I absolutely do NOT believe that this is an issue relating to intelligence...the fact that I'm a "smart" person or a "gifted" student has nothing to do with it. I'm not a doc but according to me, in my life...yes, I have thoughts that would make people think I was smart...but being bombarded with them in the quantity and manner that I am on a regular basis is TOTALLY hyperactive. And when you combine that with impulsivity it results, for me, in things like over-committment...because I have such GREAT IDEAS all the time (at least my overly enthusiastic ADHD brain thinks so) and difficulty in prioritizing them because I think they all sound so FUN and GREAT and I don't really understand the depth of work involved so I commit to things and then, thank god I AM hyperactive because I need all that energy to even attempt to get myself out of these overcommitment pickles...

Anyway, that's one way that hyperactivity can manifest, that does not have anything to do with physically risky behavior. I often wonder if there are gender differences in the way hyperactivity manifests itself...I look at me and my dad, two adult ADHDers and my dad? Loves trying crazy-ass physically risky things...he was a competitive skier, an ironworker (built high-rises, hanging off of buildings), is an obsessed hiker, used to ride motorcycles, and says that when he was a kid he was always jumping off of buildings, bicycles and more because he was "compelled", that's the word he uses. The stories about the things that he and his best friend did when they were young? The ones that I HAVE heard are crazy enough, nevermind that nobody will even tell me half of them because they're just "too crazy". Me...oh I've done crazy things, but only the kind that might risk your sanity, not life and limb.

I also find it interesting that one of my mental health peeps says that they see hyperactivity in adults far less frequently than in children. Lots of cans of worms there.

As an adult with hyperactivity I often do find it hard to relate to ADHDers who are more the inattentive type. It just always seems to me like we're having very different experiences. I wonder sometimes if it's even the same disorder, lol...I have no problem starting things, if only I could stop myself. I used to procrastinate, but...not such a problem anymore, lol...now if only I could finish everything...I kill myself all the time to complete things, it's so hard. Maybe I need to hire an inattentive as an assistant. I can start the projects, and then have them finish them? I can set a timer to remind me, to remind you, to get back on track, lol...

Lisa I agree most of us are risk takers. I have the hyperactive type so it could be more geared towards us. Not sure.
