When we talk about ADD coaching, we are really talking about three main areas of assistance---real
support for the client,
effective strategies that can make a difference, and
tools that can aid the ADDer as needed.
First and foremost, it is all about genuine and, yes,
compassionate support from the ADD coach for the ADDer. The ADD is indeed acknowledged, and the symptoms are identified so that they can be managed, not used as ongoing reminders. The strengths and talents of the coaching client are then cited, discussed, and emphasized throughout the entire coaching program. Learning to capitalize on those strengths will be key in order to experience success. Any weaknesses are de-emphasized. ADD coaching involves self-esteem building, so the client's strengths are far more important than any weakness could ever be. The ADD Coach is the support person, a kind of "cheerleader", who is there to remind the client that those strengths are ever-present, ready to help manage any ADD challenges.
In addition to this all-important coaching support, it will be essential that a collection of
realistic and practical strategies be introduced by the ADD coach and practiced by the ADD client. One or more of the strategies may need to be used alone or in combination with one another to achieve a successful result in managing some of the ADD symptoms. Most strategies will need to be implemented on a trial-and-error basis because what works for one client may not work for another. One cannot know what will be effective until it is tried. Strategies can be refined over time so that a client can become more and more successful, not only with managing the ADD symptoms, but also more successful in the workplace, in the classroom, and at home with family relationships.
Finally, the last component involved in great ADD coaching is to have access to
effective tools. These tools can be high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech, but they must be practical and beneficial to the client. The ADD Coach will recommend one or more of these tools for the client to try. Again, there may be a trial-and-error period on this, but it will be well worth the efforts made.
To benefit from ADD coaching, it is essential that all three components be available to the coaching client---
Support+Strategies+Tools. In that way, the client will experience both great coaching but more importantly, significant
success in all areas of life.
