Hello all!! My name is Jeremiah. I am 26 and live in Buffalo NY. I am hoping and praying that I become a firefighter. Buffalo is in the process of hiring a new class of ffers this year. Last year our written exam was in March and the CPAT(Candidate Physical Ability Test) was in November. I didn't do as well on the written as I had expected, but ive never been a good test taker. But I passed. And I did well in the CPAT. Passed on the first try. I suspect that I have ADHD. I am 99% sure that I do. Im going to get diagnosed asap...I want my ADHD to help and not hurt my chances in being hired as a ffer and keeping the job and doing well in it. I completely know what you guys mean about being able to focus better when in a faced paced environment!! Lol currently im a security guard and thats all about paper work, observation and all that jazz. My mind constantly wonders at that job. haha. anyway any advice guys?

OH yeah, direct coorelation to the rush and focus for me! I am so focused and thrive on it, people are amazed that I can deal with so many moving parts and people and the environment at the same time! I do it for 2 weeks at a stretch full on and then crash hard after that!

I do think there is a correlation between jobs that have fast changing environments and ADHD.

Hey! I am a former Firefighter for the DNR----absolutely my favorite job out of all the 40 jobs I have had..lol. Also, EMT trained. Question for the group, "Do you think EMS type jobs and ADHD coincide?" I find when I am rushed to respond, I can make swift, intelligent decisions with a clear head...maybe because I don't have time for my mind to wander. I don't know. Anyhow, I loved firefighting. We did wildfires in Minnesota in the rough drought years of 1987 and 1988. While most of our crew went west to Yellowstone, I stayed back in Minnesota because we were burning up as well. I fought wildfires during the spring, summer and fall months, then did income tax during the tax season---it was quite a diversion from one to the other, but it kept me from getting bored. I did this combo for about 7 years.

Never done the firefighter thing though. I tried to join a volunteer fire department back about 5 years ago was denied because I didn't want to fight fires. I wanted to work on the crash truck doing everything else only.

Wow that is cool Joshua! I have actually been on fires and worked with the New Bern departments on mutual aid! I started my hotshot career in 1990 in Herndersonville, NC on the Asheville interagency Hotshot crew!

I'm not a firefighter but I am a former EMS and Law Enforcement worker. I think public safety tends to stick together no matter what group there with. I've been out of public safety for a little over two years. I'm now a CEO of a Business Consulting firm working on my PhD in Financial Management and Advanced Accounting.
I worked with the following EMS companies.
Henrico Rescue Sandston, VA
Convalescent Transports New Bern, NC
No. 7 Township Rescue 20 New Bern, NC

Well, time to get ready for the next ride at work, we were issued a red flag warning through weds for extremely dry fine fuels and lightning predicted! Wahooooooo! Tis the season for fires!
