I just saw this post... wish I had seen it earlier! There's definitely happy endings for ADDers... I was diagnosed in March of '08, at 32 yrs old, when I started seeing a therapist because I "just couldn't get it all together". Sound familiar?! Th...

Hi Anna, I'm pretty newly diagnosed (ADHD, combined type), but guessed that I had it about 20 years ago when I read a book (I think it was called "You mean I'm not I'm not Stupid, Lazy or Crazy?") and recognized myself on just about every page. ...

Hi Anna! I think you're experiencing feelings we all feel most if not all of our lives. There is a notion that we're not normal, that somehow almost everybody is perfect and we're the elf that wants to be a dentist instead of wanting to make toys....

Very true words there. As long as you're happy with yourself, what does it matter if others consider you "normal" or not? For me "normal" pretty much spells "boring" or "uninteresting". Anyway, I have something of a success story, or at least it'...

For me learning to deal with it came way before discover I had ADD. Today I would probably be classified as gifted/learning disabled. When I was a child, it was believed that only children with lower than normal intelligence had learning disabilit...

I wanted to share briefly that I went through premature menopause at 37. The lack of estrogen in my system took my ADD from a fairly mild form of ADD to a much more extreme form. My memory went to pot - my memory is actually part of what allowed m...

Anna, I wrote just before, but I thought that I would share what I think is my success story. I am 39, 40 in October. I am just now finishing my bachelor's degree and am a happily married and have a 4 1/2 year old son. I am happy and have friends...

Anna: I like to think of my life and the ADHD issue in this way. I have ADHD. I have asthma, eczema and allergies. I am nearsited and am sometimes overweight. Whatever. I am also fun, take great joy in the things I do. I am loving, caring and cr...

From my personal experiences, It is impossible to get any job if you disclose you have ADHD or any other mental disability here in Japan. I guess it's same in US. And here I am. .. I am unemployed for 5 years. despite they have implemented the Law...

Hi Larry-Sorry to hear about the bad situation at that job. It seems like there's a lot of people out there that magnify the mistakes of others and they often seem to end up in positions of authority. I've had jobs with people like that too and if...

I absolutely do! My son is 12 and is a full time job by his self!!! When he was 3 I knew he was different-smarter than the other kids and he NEVER stayed still. I told my husband and peditrician I thought he had ADHD but they all scolded me that I...

Hi and glad to officially welcome you. Glad you jumped right in there and are sharing stuff with us! I think a lot of parents get diagnosed after one or more of their kids does. At least you can relate to what your kid is going through and be on his side when things are out of control.

Hi Anna,
Welcome to the group -or club should I say? There are things that are just so familiar to so many of us w/ AD/HD that it sometimes feels like some sort of club or mini-society.

I can really empathize with your situation. I, too, learned about my own ADD when my older child was diagnosed. Suddenly my life made sense. And yet, all the hopes for my daughter of a childhood so much better than mine seemed to go up in smoke, and I went through the necessary grieving process.

On the other side of that, and following the variety of information I absorbed in true single-minded fashion, I felt pleased and proud of the alternate perspective we've been blessed with.

We are often gifted in some capacity, and I am sure you know your own strengths and those of your children. Look for those and encourage pride in your childrens' natural talents. I explain to my kids that -yes, we have some limitations that make it harder for us to do well in some areas... so we have to compensate.. but look ar what you get in exchange for this: a beautiful way of seeing the world, certain talents, a great imagination that makes life interesting... etc.

My second child I knew from shortly after birth he was ADHD. He just needed so much stimulation and constant talking to him or he would cry. As he grew older, I saw more of the familiar traits... although slightly different. We are all individuals and each of us have to learn and experiment what works best for us. Good luck in your journey and I wish good things for you and your children.

Welcome to ADDer World Anna! Love your smile in your photo :-) It says a lot about you, I think. Yes, diagnosis, late diagnosis, can be a bit scary and yet explain so much. Understanding is the key to solving many of our mysterious and frustrating ways. I hope you find meaningful information here on ADDer World that helps you in some ways.

Bryan
