About me & Relation to ADHD or other condition?
My two kids, ages 11 & 18 were diagnosed with ADHD, while their 14 year old sister has been diagnosed with inattentive ADD. I was diagnosed with ADHD about 12 years ago, after my oldest child was diagnosed. It is challenging being an ADDer mom and trying to raise three kids with ADD/ADHD, but our home is far from dull!

Ever since I have been 11 years old, I has been passionate about writing articles, stories and poems. In addition, I enjoy sharing my faith by writing about my personal journey through overcoming difficult life experiences. My passion for writing is inspired by faith to touch others lives for encouragement, inspiration and hope.

The ADDer's Guide To Getting Through The Holiday Season WITHOUT Losing Your Mind!

The holiday season is usually a very exciting and busy time of the year, but for the ADDer it may feel totally insane! Individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD commonly experience a dramatic increase in the amount of stress, chaos, confusion, conflicts and frustrations during the holidays.

While a non-ADDer may consider the holiday season very fast paced or hectic, an individual diagnosed with ADD/ADHD will usually consider the holiday season a total NIGHTMARE! For an ADDer, the holiday season bring… Continue

COOL ADHD NEWS FROM PITTSBURGH!

I am so excited to discover today that there is a brand new ADHD center located in Pittsburgh, PA! The therapist who first diagnosed me with ADHD over 11 years ago, has referred me to Dr. Oscar Buckstein who started the ADHD center in January 2009.

Dr. Buckstein is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Today, after being referred to Dr. Buckstein, I contacted him to gain more information about the ADHD center. The program for ADDer's includes b… Continue

DO YOU FOLLOW YOUR HEART OR YOUR HEAD?

The question for the day is DO YOU FOLLOW YOUR HEART OR YOUR HEAD WHEN MAKING IMPORTANT DECISIONS?

There are so many decisions that crop up on a daily basis. Some decisions are minor, such as "What flavor Starbucks should I drink?" OR "What shall I buy at the grocery store?"

Other decisions are much more important and can alter your entire life if you accidentally make the wrong choice, such as "I am not going to take my Adderall for one month." OR "I hate my job so I am going to quit!"

For t… Continue

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ADDER GAL.....

You will NOT believe what happened to me last night when I attempted to re-read a hysterical post that our friendly neighborhood ADDer Feller, Steve, wrote last December. While I was attempting to read and respond to this previous Christmas card blog and enjoying every minute of it, suddenly, I began to experience a series of interruptions, distractions and obstacles. OH NOOOOOO, A FULL BLOWN "ADDER MOMENT!"

That's right.....While reading about our ADDer Feller, Steve's, own "ADDer Moment" with… Continue

Thanks for the welcome, Dana!

I sometimes wonder if I am doing the right thing by trying to pursue the degree I am. I really need to get on student disability services. I have no idea why I am interested in biology, to be honest. I don't come from a particularly ambitious bunch, unless you count get rich quick schemes, haha.

In response to your question about my psychiatrist, he has been very open to working with me about my medication. He pretty well makes changes when I suggest themI am currently taking the generic adderall (amphetamine), 30 mg 2x daily. However, he has told me to use it as I see fit. He does encourage me to use it regularly, but he knows that I don't because I don't need to take it to focus on a lecture, especially because I get a lot more out of the work I do alone.

I can't imagine how frustrating that must be for you to not have a say in your medication when you don't feel like its working well. I would suggest finding another doctor if possible. If that is not an option, I can only tell you would I would do (so that I am not technically reccomending this). Personally, I would save the doses from any days I didn't need to take it, and then use them on days I had more to do. Of course, I always make sure not to intentionally exceed 60 mg a day, which I understand to be the "max" dose, and I have always done any of my personal increases in small increments. I generally start with half a dose, even when I was using 20 mg, and would work my way up. Whenever I hit that point where I don't feel comfortable with how much I am taking, or when can take a few days off, I usually take a "drug holiday." In doing so, even being prescribed 30 mg per dose, I can sometimes get by with 10-15 mg. Although I don't condone abuse, I do think careful modification can be beneficial as long as common sense is applied.

I hope this helps in some way or another. Thanks again for the welcome!

aw thank you so much DANA for your wonderful comments , Maggie is definately spoiled rotten she has been sleeping in our bed right under the covers just like a little baby - how ever Jeremy is ready for her to have her own bed , given the fact that she loves take up all the bed space lol lol - other than that she's a good girl , the only problem we have had is her chewing three pieces of our living room window blinds( which was because we left her in the house by herself forabour 2 1/2 3 hours which we believe was caused by an angxiety attack ( simply because she doesn't like to be left by her self ( which i can not blame her) we think her reasons for her angxiety is because some one just abandoned her . I will be honest Maggie is the best thing that has happended to me , she makes my heart smile which is something that has happended in a long time . To me she is true blessing from god!!!!

Heya Dana;

Thanks for the welcome! I was actually totally surprised when I was diagnosed last year at 29. Of course now I look back at my childhood and I go; "DUH!, how did anyone not see it!?" There were ooh so many signs.

I don't have any kids but after looking my other family members I've realized my dad is totally ADHD, my brother is probably ADD and I'm starting to think my mom is ADD also. (They unlucky and missed the fun H part!!) Hah, and I just realized one of my favorite aunts on my moms side probably is ADD also! Uh, and some people on my dads side are probably ADHD.. interesting.

Sadly, I'm the only one that has gotten diagnosed or will even admit that we are 'different'. So far anyway! I'm working on all of them slowly... :)

Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October.
I named the turkey Billy in honour of Billy Boyd who played Peregrin "Pippin" Took in Lord of the Rings. Think of a New York accent. After all, a turkey is a kind of boyd, isn't it?
Next year I think I'll call the bird Liona after the classical guitarist :)
Oh yes, and spaghetti squash too. Yum! And cranberry sauce.
I'm not sure how we got into the habit of her cooking the holiday suppers but it's fun to hang around the kitchen like she does with me.

One advantage of being Canadian is that we've already had our Thanksgiving. Turkey (this year we named ours Billy. As in Billy Boyd), bashed neeps, yams, and stuffing. Not to mention pumpkin pie. Mmmm.
Holidays are my favourite because my lovely wife does the cooking :)
