This is a group for all of those who want to discuss how their faith or fellow participants in faith respond. It may be a chance to present prayers requests or get ideas on how to advocate for adhd amongst various faith groups, or struggles.

Hello & Welcome Eric! It was very interesting reading about your experience with Ritalin, Adderall and with no medication. In my opinion, if the medication is helping you to think more clearly, to stay on task better and to accomplish more work than it would be a good choice to continue taking medication for treating ADHD.
However, I definitely understand your concerns with college, with difficulties in having ADHD and with the challenges of side effects from medication. I totally agree that there are some symptoms of ADHD that may be negative, but we are discovering that we can NOT control.
Personally, I believe that family members, professionals and NON-ADDer's simply are not willing or are not capable of understanding that we can not control challenging ADHD symptoms.
We do not have a "magical button" in which we can just press the button and TADAA! the negative symptom magically disappeared!
In reality, the real world is not so kind and simple as to easily manage negative ADHD symptoms. Instead, most individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD usually obtain professional treatment of one form or another.
Whether it is a combination of taking stimulant medication, counseling, receiving accommodations at school or work, receiving assistance with an ADHD Coach or practicing helpful strategies to promote productive living, it is in our best interest to obtain whatever help is necessary to manage ADHD.
Eric, I would hate to see you discontinue college, but I do understand that law school is extremely challenging. My suggestion for you is to attempt to look at all of your options and to consider hiring a professional ADHD Coach to help you learn new techniques to manage your life better. Best wishes!

About me & Relation to ADHD or other condition?
I'm a 21 year old college student. I was diagnosed with severe ADHD when I was 5 years old. I was originally prescribed Ritalin. The Ritalin lead to loss of sleep so I was given another pill to help me sleep. That was ok for a while and then I started developing ticks. After years and years of struggling with this, I stopped taking all medication at the age of 12. I immediately began seeking the help of a counselor whom educated me on how to self-medicate my ADHD through various ways and exercises as well as certain diets that may help. I stayed off medication until the point where I entered college. My ADHD kept me from performing to my potential in high school and I got into college on a presidentail nomination from a president of a private school. I struggled throught the first year as I did not ask my institution for accomadations for fear of being looked at has having an advantage. I got over that and went to the counselor where I was informed that I could only access these certain accomadations if I were currently taking a prescription medication. My whole file of numerous diagnoses and stumulant taking was not enough so therefore I returned to the meds. I am now taking Adderall and Adderall XR everyday. I really like the way it helps me concentrate but it adversely effects my personality when I come off of it. Sometimes I have serious trouble sleeping as well. I want to go to law school after I graduate so giving the meds up isn't an option. I have recently began educating myself on ADHD in adults and am trying to learn as much as I can about it so that I dont have to feel uncomfortable about the way I act anymore. There are some things that I REALLY CANT HELP. I look to my family for advice but they just say, "Why must you blame everything on your ADHD," which really upsets me especially after I take down my defenses and tell them how I really feel. I only want them to understand what I deal with on a day to day basis. I understand that some cases of adhd are light but mine is definitely not. I'm starting to feel like I really can't suceed in college and go to law school because of my disorder. I'm not having a pity party, i'm not looking for any sympathy. I only need guidance to help me reach my goal. Almost like a mentor or a coach....
