Hi Heather.

I found you on the Parents ADHD discussion page. I am working on a film about families coping with ADHD and was hoping I could enlist your help. Please forgive me for being so forward. I understand it is a sensitive subject for most - precisely why it deserves attention.

The project is an educational and promotional film aiming to raise awareness of ADHD. It is intended for parents, doctors, caregivers, etc. We're structuring it as an exploration of children roughly 6 to 12 years of age who have been diagnosed with ADHD.

We are looking to create intimate family portraits that show the different emotional, psychological, educational and social implications of a very real disease that – though widely diagnosed - is so often misunderstood.

We are looking for a variety of experiences, but at the moment, particularly children who are newly diagnosed and not yet on medication, those who have stopped medication for any reason, or those who only medicate some of the time.

If you are interested in participating, please contact me as soon as possible, day or night!!! And feel free to forward widely. We are able to offer some compensation for people's time and energy.

Best,
Jenny

Hi Heather,

Just checking in to see how you are doing?

I read your post below about books. I try to invest in shorter books. I really like books filled with short stories, that way I don't get too involved with something I won't ever finish. It can be frustrated. Also, try eccentric authors and those known to have ADHD, you might find the way they write more interesting and keep you involved. Poe is a good example, but a little on the dark side.

Have a great day!

My problem is I never stick with the books. For someone who says she likes to read. I have a shelf full of parenting books, some I've read, at least part way, others I bought with good intentions but they just sit there on myself looking intellegent. :) Some I read and they sound real nice and logical but when a situation arises I'm thinking.. I sure wish I remembered what that book said...

Heather sweetie... I'm so sorry that things are so hard for you right now. I empathize with you so very much. Don't hate the ADHD. Seriously. Yes, it can suck - big time, we all know that. But you can't change the fact that it is with you and your children. You can, however, change your attitude towards it - and doing that will make it so much more manageable. I used to hate it too - and I used to hate ME... no more.

If you can accept ADHD as a part of your life (which it will be, regardless of whether you accept it or not) - then you can move forward and learn how to best deal with it. There's lots of support and lots of things that you can do to make your life easier - and to help your children as well - but accepting and yes, even embracing ADHD is the first step to it.

I know how daunting and overwhelming it is, trust me. Pick one small thing, one tiny thing, and conquer it. And when you do... relish in your success. Celebrate it! And then pick another small thing. Small things add up, believe me.

If you need help, tips, websites, etc... please let me know - I'll be happy to share what I've learned, and what works for me (and yes, I am very much a work in progress - so I don't have all the answers!!!) Just know that you're not alone, and there's people here willing to help you!!!!!!

Me These Days

I sit here day after day; night after night, planning on posting something; anything, half way intellegible. Amongst the typical distractions. I can't figure out where I should post. I try to change my profile pic. It doesn't work for me so I spend I don't know how long trying to do that and give up. It's not the uploading pictures I have a problem with, I don't think, I think it's the size of them... Anyhow...
What I was trying to say is.....

Loser Alert

I hate myself. I mean seriously, how does this forever losing things happen? Tonight I pulled everything out of my jeans pocket, including my driver's license, put it all on my dresser and got ready for bed. Then my hubby reminds me that we have no cereal. I think about what we do have (nothing) and decide to go to the store. So I get dressed again, go downstairs, get ready to leave, remember my license is upstairs. I go grab it and everything else that was originally in my pockets. bring it all… Continue

Conversation

My hubby and I were just lying around talking. He wasn't saying anything extremely boring. In fact some of it was quite interesting. I don't see him for most of the day while he's at work so getting a chance to talk is a good thing.
However, I got so stinking bored I literally, physically didn't feel good. I was trying so hard to be still I got up once and looked out the window for, as far as he could tell, no reason at all.
It was hard work just keeping focused on his words.
Once in a while I d… Continue

My ADD (a poem)

This is a poem I wrote one night while I was up in the wee hours of the morning.
I had just been talking with someone about my kids (OCD and ADHD/ODD) .
She went on a rampage about how the doctors are trying to "tag" her daughter with ADHD and she doesn't trust psychologist or even believe there is any such thing as ADHD. And most people who do believe it exists think only kids have it and you grow out of it.
I won't use it as "an excuse to quit" but sometimes I just don't know if I should keep… Continue
