From what I've read and experienced myself, we ADHDers (especially those of us who are still learning to work WITH our ADHD) struggle with issues such as loss of self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy bc we didn't fit into non-ADHDer society to we...

About me & Relation to ADHD or other condition?
A graduate student in a writing program, I am someone who is both lucky and unlucky enough to have ADHD! I am learning to make it work for me. I am currently writing my PhD dissertation on, you guessed it, ADHD and Writing. If you have any ideas from personal experiences, please share them with me.

Hello Jacquelyn! If you want to find out who is celebrating a birthday, go to the MAIN page and look on the left side of your computer screen. You will find the Main page at the top of the ADDer World site along the upper list of headings, such as Members, Invite, My Page, Forum, Blogs, etc.....

This must be a new aspect of ADDer World because I do not recall seeing members birthdays listed on the main page, until recently. Then again, perhaps it has been listed there all along, but I simply never noticed it!?

Have a wonderful week and take care!

Good morning Jacquelyn! Congratulations on getting your PHD! It is not how long it took you, but the simple fact that you stuck with it and have completed what you started that counts!

When I decided to go to college for Journalism, I registered too late for my classes. I suppose this was expected of me since I have ADHD, but what happened was that all the writing classes that I wanted to take for my first semester were already taken.

I ended up having to take a copy editing class, which for me was a very bad idea. For starters, back in 1984-1985, I never even used a computer in my entire life! No joke! So there I was for the first time in a Journalism class in front of a computer and I had no idea how to edit on the computer. Yikes! Talk about humiliating and totally embarrassing!

The bottom line was that I could not function in that class, due to my lack of computer literacy. On top of that, I took a night class in which I could barely maintain my attention at the late hour.

I was very distracted with all the social activity of living in the dorm. Being a very social individual, I ended up just having more fun and not doing well academically, due to the combination of undiagnosed ADHD, classes that were too advanced and night classes when I was too tired to pay attention. I figured out early on that this was not going to work successfully. I felt horrible about giving up my passion for writing, but I felt like a complete failure.

As far as when I write best, that is a good question? Hmmm....In all honesty, it depends on how noisy my kids are, how many distractions I have and whether I can sit down and focus. Once I get inspired to write something, usually I am pretty determined and I go full force working on it.

I can understand why writing for you is best in the early hours of the morning. It is very quiet and you most likely have no interruptions so it makes good sense to me! If I had some good coffee or a Starbucks latte, this may actually work for me, too! I have been known to stay up half the night writing when my family is sleeping. I do need to have it quiet to concentrate, but through the years, with three ADHD kids, I have gotten used to writing in the midst of many distractions.

What are your career plans once you graduate? Do you mind my asking which medication you take? I am actually getting ready to go to my second appointment with a psychiatrist about my ADHD. I am hoping that he will consider Adderall, but I will have to wait and see.

I have tried many holistic products, such as Omega oils, ginseng, guarana, pycnogenol and phosphatidylserine, which many of these have helped with concentration and focus. I think that there are pro's and con's to both traditional medication and alternative medicine. I personally believe that whatever method works successfully is the one to go with!

Gotta run or I will be late for my appointment! Have a terrific weekend!

Very interesting writing topic! The writing program sounds very exciting!
I have always had a passion for writing, but when I was much younger, I was not diagnosed with ADHD so I had no idea why I was challenged with college. Eventually, I decided to quit Journalism and to only write as a hobby. Here it is, many years later and I am back to writing seriously, but without a degree. My professional background is in the beauty industry.

How did you get into writing and exactly what do you enjoy writing about? Does medication help with focusing better and staying on task?
Medication did not work for me so I use alternative treatments.

Nice meeting you on ADDer World!

Hi Jacquelyn, thanks for your comment on my blog. I would very much like to read your dissertation, if you want to allow me to and if that's possible. I am glad you stuck to your guns and not allow anyone to convince you otherwise of what you know and live with!

Ditto what Bryan said! Wow, writing with ADHD, I just write how the thoughts come into my head unless I am writing a technical paper for work. I would be interested in how your research comes out and your final paper on the subject!
