For any ADDers who see a counselor or therapist (or have, in the past). Does your counselor or therapist understand your ADD and how it impacts your life?
You are good. PA... CLOSE... I live 1 mile from the PA boarder in Delaware. 11 miles from the Delaware Memorial Bridge... the gateway to EVERYWHERE!!! I will send you a pm with the details...
I am now, in the very well respected and competent hands, of Dr. Ted Hallowell in New York. Yes, I drive 2 1/2 hours into NYC and 2 1/2 hours home for a 1/2 hour appointment. I will tell you the whole story... but let me just say... how good it is to be connected with people who actually know what they are talking about. That includes you!
I am almost a year into my diagnosis... but last year at this very time I was stressed BEYOND BELIEF... trying to find someone, ANYONE who knew anything about adult ADD. I have been insulted by mental health care professionals who don't know "JACK" about ADD let alone adult ADD. I was in a crisis at work and as a result I have since lost my job. I requested to switch counselors locally and was denied.
I have nothing but respect for the Hallowell Center and what they have done for me, but... they do not accept insurance... my health insurance and unemployment are tick-tocking away... around here it takes atleast a month to get an initial appointment with a Psychiatrist And my experience... another month to answer INTAKE questions to prove you are not a threat to yourself or others...
In crisis and facing the impending loss of my job... THANK GOD I found the Hallowell Center and it is only 2 1/2 hours away, but locally I have nothing... and I have tried... to find people... but with so much time involved... to even get the first appointment...I don't have time to mess around...
ADD seems to be a problem for which CHILDREN can find treatment but adults are dismissed and diagnosed and labeled with Mood Disorder...
I am an intelligent (educated), insightful and tenacious person. I realize "mental health" professionals have a job to do... no disrespect... but let's cut the crap... (that's my ADD...) I am a good person. No guns in the home... no desires to hurt anyone... including myself...
HELP ME... help myself...

Hi Kara! Just wanted to stop by and say welcome! We're so glad to have you here, I'm sure your insight and expertise will be a great contribution to the community here!
Bythesea,
It is so disappointing to here when people have experiences like that with a therapist. It is not supposed to me like that. Therapy is like any other relationship, you have to click and if you don't then you need to move on. I agree the best way to find a therapist is by word of mouth. Almost all of my referrals are by word of mouth and the rest come from the insurance companies. The patient should run the therapy session and have their goals met not the therapist!! If I can help in any way let me know!! Kara T.
Hi Kara. I saw your post on Kelly's wall. I agree. The first psychologist I went to was not a fit either. Even though ADD himself, he had not paced himself so was half-falling asleep in our session until he had to excuse himself and go get a soda - the short walk + soda + afternoon med he took right before I arrived kicked in. I thought, how am I going to learn from him? Also he seemed overly interested in digging into my dating life and/or other issues. I was a grad student with horrible writer's block, I wanted practical ideas... closer to "coaching". So it took me a little while but I got the name of someone I knew another student had used. That person also had ADD and turned out to be a great fit. But as a psychologist couldn't prescribe meds so those came from my primary doctor. Anyway, not that everyone will be like me, but wanted to affirm that at least for someone you were on the right track. So nice of you to reach out with your post. :) p.s. I also just joined this ning last night.
I see that you are a psychotherapist who works with adults and children. Do you have any advice for someone trying to find qualified professionals in their area? I have had a difficult time and I have also been talking with someone on this site that is experiencing the same thing.
Glad you are here!!!
