Hi Karen! It was so nice hearing from you!

Hey, guess what.... I finally have started on Adderall for the first time and I am feeling a bit more focused and motivated. My kids are home full-time with summer here so I have been busy with them. My 18 year old son is still working part-time at a local restaurant, hanging out with his friends and helping his grandfather do yard work for extra income.

My 11 year old just got back on Ritalin after being off of it for one year. She definitely was having challenges with concentration and being distracted. She wants to stay home and cyber school this Fall, but I am unsure about it. She has an IEP for learning disabilities and I prefer that she attends the public school.

My 14 year old does cyber school, but she is not hyperactive. She is more mature and able to do her school work without me constantly having to supervise her. She is going into 9th grade this Fall.

So what have you been doing all summer? I hope that you are doing well and enjoying yourself!

Hi! How was your Christmas for you and your family? My husband, kids and I spent Christmas Day with my mother, father-in-law, four older sisters and their families. We had a wonderful dinner, played some games and had some fun! Yesterday, my two daughters, my hubby & I went to see the movie called, "Marley & Me." We have a yellow lab and we are all dog lovers so we enjoyed the movie. It was a good movie, but sad at the end. Not a dry eye in the theater!

For New Years Eve, my sister is having everyone over her house for some fun, food & board games. It should be a good time and a fun way to ring in the new year! I hope that you have a wonderful New Years whatever you do!

Hi Karen - Yep, counting the days till break! We're out Dec. 19 - how about you? Do you work on your grad degree most weekends? Wow! The Strattera seems to be having an effect - out of the last 14 days since I started taking it, I only had one really bad one. My usual mode is to constantly be on the brink of having a really bad day, so this is pretty okay.

Hi Karen -

Nice to meet you! I would've written over the weekend, but I've been sick and busy - you know how the teaching thing goes. I have to laugh at how I feel for my ADD students these days - seems like another girl (I teach French in an all-girls' high school) gets diagnosed practically every week.

I'm a single mom too - my son who will turn 8 on Friday. How old are your kids?

Anyway, I just got back from the doc - I'm finally cleared (I have a heart issue that is no big deal; had to get it checked out though) to take ADHD medication - so I start Strattera tomorrow. I'm pretty excited, which is kind of funny, because I generally hate to take pills!

Anyway, glad you wrote and lets stay in touch.

Good morning Karen! On your comment to me, you mentioned that your 13 year old daughter had been tested with the Connors Behavioral testing.
I have two kids already diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADHD.
Many years ago, when I thought my kids were having problems in school and much hyperactivity, I had requested a comprehensive evaluation by the elementary school that they attended. Once a parent requests that her children have an evaluation for the possibility of learning disabilities, the school district must evaluate, by law, within 60 days. The testing is NOT just behavioral, but much intense testing in all area's of academics and some psychological testing, too. Therefore, my question to you about your 13 year old is: Have you requested in writing that your daughter receive a comprehensive evaluation by her school district? Go with your GUT feeling because it is normally always right!!! If you think that something is not quite right with your daughters learning, then you are probably correct. You know your daughter better than anyone else. Trust your instincts and advocate for your daughter to get evaluated. The first step is writing the request. If you need a copy of a letter to request a child to have an evaluation, let me know because I have a copy that the state board of education sent me. Usually, once you send the request to evaluate to the school district (the special education department), there will be a licensed child psychologist that will spend several days testing your daughter. Typically, the child psychologist will come to your daughters school and test her there. Once all the testing is complete and the child psychologist completes this evaluation, which can take several months, there will be a formal meeting with you (the parents), the school teacher, the principle and the special education teacher. If you want to hire an advocate to help you get the proper education for your daughter, you can look into this now. Several times, I have hired out educational advocates and I did not have to pay anything. If they work for the state, it is usually free, but if you hire a private educational advocate, they charge very much money for their services. I definitely recommend that you request your 13 year old daughter to be evaluated for possible learning disabilities. In my experience, even when my son was denied special education and the school had said that he did not qualify for special ed, I fought the school and I received a second opinion by another licensed child psychologist. That was a difficult time for me as a parent, but I persisted and my gut feeling about my son was correct. It turned out that the second opinion from the licensed child psychologist diagnosed my son with learning disabilities in math, reading and spelling as well as a disability with processing information. On top of that, he diagnosed my son with anxiety. (No wonder my son had anxiety at this point!) It took close to one year for all this to happen and it was a very stressful time for me, but all my hard determination and persistence paid off!!! My son did get diagnosed with a learning disability, which meant that the school district had to provide an IEP and accommodate my son. This was the best thing that ever happened and special education helped my son academically. Now my son is in 11th grade and he is doing wonderful! He no longer even needs special ed now that he is older, but we are so grateful for all the years that he did have an IEP because it helped him succeed in school. It also helped him learn new skills to deal with learning disabilities.

Sorry that this is so much information, but I really wanted to share what has helped my kids receive special education. I pray that your daughter can receive the correct evaluation and that you can discover if she does have learning disabilities. Keep me posted on how she is doing.

Take care!

Hi Karen! We have been getting snow flurries in Pittsburgh on and off for at least one week. For now, we have not had much snow, only flurries!

Something amazing happened this week! I discovered that my 13 year old daughter has ADD, the inattentive type. I can't believe that I did not realize this much sooner! But my daughter is the quiet, shy child who can easily be missed since her older brother and younger sister have ADHD with much hyperactivity! In the book, "WOMEN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT" Sari Solden explains female teen symptoms of the inattentive ADD. (Hypoactive, disorganized, shy, withdrawn, struggling academically, inattentive and usually "invisible".) I have not, yet, had my daughter evaluated for ADD or learning disabilities. I am not sure if her cyber school special ed department is knowledgeable about teenage girls with ADD. Do you think that I should take my daughter for an ADD evaluation
with an outside professional? If so, does it have to be a child psychologist or can it be a social worker? Do you have any suggestions for me? If so, I would appreciate any feedback.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

I wish I could take credit for them but it's a background picture from nitpicks I think. One of these days I'll be able to knit my own.

About me & Relation to ADHD or other condition?
Thinking back....I never thought I had ADD. That was my brother ;) I recieved very lousy grades in high school, but worked well with others. I played the flute, had volunteered with the sped kids throughout....
I began college again 8 days after my daughter was born. It was then I realized that I had a problem. I was diagnosed over 12 years ago thankfully.
