Hi, Kip. I have been working 60-70 hour weeks so haven't been very active on this. But I lost my job this week so now I am being forced to slow down. So now am having the fun and joys of job hunting.

HAPPY MONDAY TO ALL OF US STEELERS FANS!!! Wow! What an exciting game that was last night with the Cardinals! For a second, I was really getting scared...... But as usual, the Steelers stepped it up a notch and made another victory! Pittsburgh is definitely celebrating today!

Well Kip, looks like I have survived the Council. Just had our budget hearing tonight. Although they completely obliterated my department, I still have a job. I used to supervise two building inspectors, a GIS tech, the Co. Engineer, two secretaries and one transcriptionist. Now just me and the transcriptionist make up the department. They decided that I need to focus on planning (which is my skill) and leave managing the non-planners to others. I spent so much time dealing with personell issues I couldn't do any real planning. Now they are going to let me hire a planner and planning tech and rebuild the department and systems from scratch without all the distracting garbage. I am building back the confidence the Council lost and am going to be able to get something done...yeah. How's the planning climate in your neck of the woods?

I have specialized my career in small town and rural areas, as well. I am currently working for a rural county in Utah, that is projected to be the fastest growing county in the state within 10 years. We are being discovered as the wasatch front fills from Urban Sprawl. However, the economy has put a damper on development, so now we are strained now that new growth is way down. Suddenly the Council that wanted me to "control" growth, ie. "stop" growth, is having second thoughts about the fiscal benefits of growth.

How was Halloween in your neck of the woods? It was good here, kids had fun, even the teenager! I think the dog is the only one that does not enjoy halloween, too many kids ringing the bell on her porch!

Kip, what a crack up! Of all the people on this website what are the odds that you would be the first one to invite me to be a friend. I am amazed because I am an Urban Planner as well! I work for a county here in Utah. Good to meet you.

Ticked OFF

I've never really cared for the actor Dennis Leary and he didn't do much this morning to get in my good graces. I've always thought he was very crude and hurtful with his comments and I don't know how anyone could consider the venom he spits out to be comedy, but today an article I read really ticked me off.

Leary's new book just came out and in it he makes these statements:

"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why t… Continue

History Walk

Well, I took the students on a history walk this morning. They seemed to have a great time. I started things off by telling them how much I loved their brochures they made me and that I had a special surprise for them.

After a brief history lesson, I pulled out a bag of mussel sh… Continue

Money Math

Hey,
I talked with my son's teacher today and she asked if I would start helping him with counting money. He seems to be weak in that area. He's in the 3rd grade, so this will kind of give you an idea of the types of money problems they work on in class.
Does anyone have any creative and effective ways that I could work with him on these problems?

Thanks for all of your time and wisdom,

Kip

City Planners come in all ages

This morning I woke up very excited. I was scheduled to speak to some of the elementary students about my job and the duties it requires. Of course I can remember when I was a kid and we had a speaker, if they were boring, you just wanted the speech to be over. I didn't want to leave the kids feeling that way so I had a plan.

When I got there I learned that the class I would be speaking to was the special needs class which had grades 3rd through 7th. I recieved a very warm greeting from the gro… Continue
