The official stats taught in colleges about ADHD currently state that it occurs in boys anywhere from two to four tomes as often as in girls. I get grouchy every time I see that because well... Society's expectations regarding gender roles allows gi…

Yeah I was intimidated, this was the first doctor I had seen about ANYTHING in a few years. It was consistent with my experience with doctors, really. I show up and say "this and such is wrong" and am told "no you're fine/it's really because of this…

Okay I tried to read through this entire discussion before responding, as is the polite thing to do, but had a sudden attack of tl;dr (it's been a long day!) so I will just add my two cents. My current instructors at college are pretty good usually…

I find that white noise causes a serious sensory overload for me. I actually find that I do better if I listen to music with which I can hum along under my breath or at the top of my lungs. Instrumental, vocal, lyrics in any language, and multiple…

My personal favourite was the first doctor I spoke to as an adult seeking assessment for ADHD -- "you watch Survivor? Oh. Uhm... *lists a bunch of other TV shows* No? Well what do you watch? Can you sit through an entire episode? Well then you don't…

I know I've been quiet for a while, but finals are approaching -- I should be around more during semester break.

Beautiful and poignant, she ripped my heart out.

This was linked to me today by a schoolmate and it really struck a chord for me. "ADD is not an excuse, misbehavior, or a result of laziness. ADD is what happens when there is physically something wrong with your brain. ADD medication is w..."

I think a lot of physicians just do not have a clue about ADHD in adults. It is only supposed to affect young boys, after all. Never adults, and certainly never women, or so the doctor I went to seemed to believe. He all but laughed in my face when…

This sounds very similar to my own experiences, although I am just barely managing to finish my SNEA certificate in twice the allotted time. I am very anxious to go back to university and finish my degree, but I am also very well aware that I could…

Hah, this is pretty much what I suggested to my client's mom. The client is 11 and has ADHD, the mom has ADHD and FAS, and they end up shouting at each other a lot because she tells him to do something, then thinks of three other things he needs to…

I too was a voracious reader, and could devour large novels in short periods of time. Now, I avoid reading because I know if I get immerssed in a book, I will be very tired and hungry and possibly in a lot of trouble by the time I finish due to negl…

- you have "unexplained" bruises on your arms and legs from walking into things and then forgetting you did it - you need to make a doctor's appointment to get some meds, and keep reminding yourself about it, but only ever think of it at 2 AM. - you…

ADHD and me: the perpetual klutz.

So I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I'm guessing yes. As I type this, I keep checking my wounds to see if they actually need band-aids -- I recently parted company with a little bit of skin on the palm of my left hand, the back of my left forearm (I'm talented like that!) and my left knee (and even a tiny bit on my right knee... but not nearly so bad as the left). All three of these locations are grotesquely swollen and beginning to turn interesting colours like green and purple… Continue

Apparently I don't fit in a box...

I thought this was hilarious. Twice now (with a different mindset each time) I have filled out eHarmony's sign-up questionnaire or whatever it's called, just out of curiosity. I was as honest as I could be each time, and both times I got this:

"Unable To Match You At This Time

eHarmony is based upon a complex matching system developed through extensive research with married couples. One of the requirements for successful matching is that participants fall within certain defined profiles. If we… Continue

Overstimulation?

So I was doing my daily webcomic rounds when I came across this little gem from Randall Munroe's xkcd webcomic. It expresses what I have felt so incredibly many times and have not been able to describe as anything other than "total sensory overload" where there is just too much going on for me to even try to process, and I end up tuning it all out.

I was sitting in the student lounge at my college a couple of mo… Continue

Hyperfocus: The Untapped Superpower of ADHD?

We all do it sometimes. We get absorbed in something, and hours pass in the blink of an eye. The old adage "time flies when you're having fun" is somewhat true, but for many people with ADHD, or for myself anyways, it should read "time flies when you're concentrating on something." It doesn't have to be fun necessarily, just absorbing. For me, if I'm "in the groove," nothing will bring me out of it, short of the phone ringing (very rare in my house!) or an extremely urgent signal from my bladder… Continue

Reflection on the close of the semester

So for the first time in my life, I finished an entire academic semester with full academic supports. I have my digital voice recorder with indexing to help me with my notes in class, I have permission to take notes on my laptop, I have text-to-speech software to help me stay focused while reading, and I have software to help me with the process of planning and organizing things. I have a good quality headset to use with my speech recognition software when writing papers. I have access to an aca… Continue

Fantastic Poem. Feel free to share it here in a blog post. Copy it over and at the bottom, for a signature, add your blog link. Please make sure you copy the entire poem over, if you choose to, because, just linking to your blog I would have to remove. Copying your posts over in their entirety and a one line link signature will help you get traffic. Make sense? Any questions, just write me :-) You’re a wonderful writer btw.
