Hi Wendy. I can tell you that ADD is often taken less seriously in developing countries than say, the US or the UK, and that your med options are less. However, keep looking for a good psychologist or MD and you may get lucky. On the bright side, th…

Newbie here - any insight on treatment in 3rd world country?

Hi,

Very briefly, I'm 40, was diagnosed with ADD in March 09, and am struggling to plan lessons and curriculum as a 5th year elementary teacher. I moved to Karachi, Pakistan this summer to teach at a fantastic American school, but have found out the only medication available is Ritalin. I rushed through a titration in May/June, ending up with dexadrine (7 hr) 15mg, and Wellbutrin. I briefly tried Focalin, but couldn't get a clear read on it. After listening to Dr. Parker's presentation during t… Continue

Hello & Welcome Wendy! What an amazing opportunity to teach 5th grade in Pakistan! How did you get into this and how long do you plan to live there? Also, how did you ever discover that you have ADHD? Have you considered using natural alternatives to medication since you could easily order this over the internet?

When you have the time, feel free to share your experiences with living in Pakistan and working as a music teacher. It sounds fascinating!

Hi Wendy! I don't know anything about how Pakistan (or any other Third World Country) handles ADD medications or what kinds of medications Pakistan even has access to. However, I just wanted to reach out to you and say hello because it sounds like we share some similarities (location not being one of them!). I'm 43 and I was just recently told that I likely have ADD/ADHD and I'm a former teacher (Secondary Education Teacher) and now I'm a Medical Social Worker. Looking back on the days when I was a teacher, I struggled with developing lesson plans and curriculum, too. Back then, I didn't know anything about Adult ADD/ADHD and I about drove myself crazy putting lesson plans together because it seemed like it took me FOREVER (and it seemed like I had to put a lot more energy into it than what others did and I became quite frustrated after awhile). Now that I'm a licensed clinical social worker, the thing that I struggle with is getting my typed paper work turned in on time and doing long-term planning with clients (when I can barely manage my own life without losing things on a daily basis, forgetting things, getting distracted, tripping & stumbling over things, and on and on it goes...). I was recently placed on Adderall XR and I'm hoping it will help me focus on getting my planning and paperwork done. I get so easily distracted and my attention span is short and I have a tendency to be impulsive at times (yet at other times I'm slower than a slug and it's all I can do to move ..thus, my house is a disorganized mess). Anyway, I just wanted to wish you a warm hello and let you know that I hope you get the answers that you need on this website. I think it's awesome that you are a 5th-grade teacher in a Third World Country! Do you have a strong support system where you are located?
