In the past, I photographed the kids when they came to my door in costume, trick-or-treating - then posted the pictures by year, making them available to the kids, their parents and the community. In Dobbs Ferry, that was OK.
I asked a neighbor about doing the same thing here, in Summit, and was told it was a bad idea. People would object strongly. So I didn't do it.
What I did instead, was to photograph the community's Halloween celebration (including parade) and posted all of those on my sit…

You will NOT believe what happened to me last night when I attempted to re-read a hysterical post that our friendly neighborhood ADDer Feller, Steve, wrote last December. While I was attempting to read and respond to this previous Christmas card blog and enjoying every minute of it, suddenly, I began to experience a series of interruptions, distractions and obstacles. OH NOOOOOO, A FULL BLOWN "ADDER MOMENT!"
That's right.....While reading about our ADDer Feller, Steve's, own "ADDer Moment" with…

It's been a while since I've blogged , I didn't do anything for halloween & we didn't have any tricker treater's in our trailor park since it did nothing but pour rain all day & all night , I wonder what my big man was for halloween or if Gerald & Grace( his adoptive parents) or if they did something different w/ him given the fact that they are very very very christian people. Halloween was really rough for me , miss my big man so badly that I just wanted to curl up & cry until…

When I left Dobbs Ferry, I left my entire medical support system behind. Somewhere around the 10th day after moving, I was aware of a problem with one of the few real teeth I have left (most are implants, root-canaled or bridged).
I found an oral surgeon several towns away (you can't go anywhere around here without a GPS, like a TomTom) who could see me immediately. He gave me the choice of coming back with my wife so I could be sedated (my usual preference), but she's been so hyper since we ca…

After writing a new blog for the ADHD & MARRIED GROUP, I decided to post the same blog for everyone on ADDer World. Men may have the "fringe benefit" of having a helpful wife or girlfriend to take on holiday responsibilities and duties, but I wanted to address both males & females as well as both single adults and married adults. I sure hope that this is helpful for you!
Today, it is officially two months, until CHRISTMAS! If you are Jewish, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 11th a…

We moved into a house we rented about 1/2 the size of the one we have in Dobbs Ferry (waiting to close - end of November).
Not only does nothing fit, but I can't find the things I need or want. Some of that is my own doing because I packed things in boxes for the movers in a way that made sense to me at the time. Now, add in the fact that, because it was taking me so long to pack, my wife decided to help and packed things for me. Those I can't find at all!
I'm tempted to believe this happens t…

So, that Britney song is playing on the radio in my head...(yes, I'm again without my meds - that's a whole different story)...
So I broke up with my boyfriend last Monday. Typical ADD whirlwind relationship... I was a couple weeks out of my last relationship, the 4 year one... when I reconnected with someone I went to HS with. We didn't know each other really in school... but he asked me out, and we went out on a date... which was cool, and fun... and in SOOO typical ADD fashion, I invited him…

I stumbled upon this fantastic Canadian TV special all about adults with ADD. It is called
ADD & Loving It and should be required viewing for newly diagnosed adults and their families :)

I just read an article in the medical journal to which I subscribe that I thought would be of interest. Below are the main points:
- Attention is mediated by the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine.
- In patients with ADD these chemicals are present in reduced amounts.
- Exercise increases the amount of norepinephrine and dopamine as well as other neurochemicals.
- Muscles aren't the only things that grow with exercise. Over time, exercise improves the system that provides these neuro…

Passing the Torch: Postsecondary Transition for Students with Disabilities
By Jennifer Hursey, M. Ed.
Transitioning from high school to the workforce, college, technical school, or university is scary and overwhelming for kids with or without learning disabilities. From the day they enter as freshmen "tweens" to the final 180 days of their senior year, high schoolers are faced with the pressure of "what next, how will I get there, how will I make it?" These are not unfamiliar questions…

Bumps Abound When Students Become Their Own Advocates
Special Needs Can Make Transition to College Tricky
By Susan Kinzie
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, October 25, 2008;
After a decade of worrying about her son's attention-deficit disorder, meeting with teachers, calling around to get lost homework assignments and getting advice on SAT test accommodations, Lori Spinelli-Samara is facing this simple truth: Next year, in college, Nick is on his own.
The Olney mother knows he's…

Hi everybody! My name is Penni and I'm looking for some advice/guidance/wisdom (or whatever else you may have to offer! LOL!) I was recently told that I likely have ADHD at the age of 43 (GULP!) and I was recently placed on Adderall XR 20 mg and it was just titrated up to 30 mg. The doctor (Psychiatrist) placed me on the long-lasting Adderall (Adderall XR) because I don't do a good job of remembering to take medications (unless it's in the morning). Before this, I'd already been diagnosed with r…

Hi,
Very briefly, I'm 40, was diagnosed with ADD in March 09, and am struggling to plan lessons and curriculum as a 5th year elementary teacher. I moved to Karachi, Pakistan this summer to teach at a fantastic American school, but have found out the only medication available is Ritalin. I rushed through a titration in May/June, ending up with dexadrine (7 hr) 15mg, and Wellbutrin. I briefly tried Focalin, but couldn't get a clear read on it. After listening to Dr. Parker's presentation during t…

Hello all of you wonderful people who have tried to befriend me and get to know me over the past two years. I have been 'missing in action'. I'm Back!
For 2 years I steadily traveled back and forth from Vermont where I live, to Florida where my elderly, ill parents lived. I tried to run my therapy practice, my coaching business and my life while helping to take care of my parents. Unfortunately my writing suffered. Actually, because of the pain, I've been blocked most of those 2 years. Over a 2…

I just thought I would start this month’s blog theme with a bit of a summary of the different skills that are required in the different contexts - home, preschool, school and high school. These changes can bring challenges for all children, but we need to take special care to prepare children who have disabilities for these changes as many may take a little longer to learn the skills necessary and take a little longer to adjust to the change - expecially if they have developmental delays, Autism…

A man was quietly eating his breakfast.
Suddenly, the piece of bread which he had just
spread with butter fell to the ground.
Imagine his surprise when he looked down
and saw that it had landed buttered side up! The
man thought he had witnessed a miracle.
Excited, he went to tell his friends what had
happened, and they were all amazed because
when a piece of bread falls on the floor, i…
