ADD & ADHD Online Social Network Community

Hi All

I am asking to use you!!!

I know that most parents do not take in all of what I tell them about ADHD - there is a lot of info the first time I see them. So, to help with that, I am creating a handout for them to take home. Yes, I know there is a lot of info out there, but I am writing my own.

I am wondering if any of you would be willing to read it when it is done, and just let me know if it is clear, and helpful, or if it is missing anything?

Thanks

yes, i do think it's publishable.

"If you engage with them in this state, things will just escalate",  as written, unclear if this state refers to before the hour break ( i assume so) or after.

p 13 you talk re the meds.  but earlier, you emphasized SKILLS but they are never mentioned again.  maybe something like  -"the meds can be extremely useful, and one of the ways is to help the child focus as they develop the skills, which i will be discussing with you"  (my sentence is not any good but just to give you the idea).

Thanks Doug!

I have gone back and tweaked things as you have suggested.

A few things -between your comments of p12 and p 13, you comment "in what state??" I am not quite clear on that.

You suggest I might want to mention skills on p 13 - again, not quite clear,

Page 20 is something that I created to give to parents to put on the front of their accordion file of all their children's school paperwork - just a reminder to them how important they are in advocating for their children.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were helpful.

I am glad that you think this is a good handout. Do you really think it is publishable?

Margaret

This is great! Should be very helpful.  You may want to think about publishing it.

Here are my comments/suggestions

Best wishes

P3 pp2 the H (hyperactivity)

Combined (the most common)     or put adhd  ( the most common in boys), pi the most common in girls, or whatever is accurate

dsmVnow

p4 the venn diagram might be more accurate, with more overlaps, some kids have all 4,

you might mention that add predisposes or “can cause” mood disorder, etc

dopamine is one of the brain chemicals called “neurotransmitters” because they are the way brain cells talk to each other

p 8 personal note, I thought my son was defiant, he’d tell me hed cleaned his room, and hed done nothing.  One day  I sarcastically told him, put your dirty clothes in the hamper, your shoes in the closet, your toys in the toy box etc, and he did it.!  He could not execute ‘clean your room”.

P9 it might be that they didn’t get enough sleep, or that they used all their mental energy on some other task, or that its just not a good day for them.

P10 and the right timing

P 11 that doesn’t mean your child will get any of them, but they certainly might.  Then we can make adjusstments.

P12 stomaches – take the pills with food

In which state???

P 13 you might want to say something about the SKILLS

15 possible side effects

20 I don’t find p 20 quite clear

Do you want to take the risk of raising the possibility that a parent may also have add???

ADHD%20parent%20handout%20%281%29.doc

Hopefully, this link will open the document. However, I have serious doubts about the internet at times, so I have no idea if it will really work!

If there is a better way to get this to you guys, somebody please let me know! I am looking forward to your feedback.
