ADDer World Anything and Everything ADHD

Anything & Everything ADHD

When you think about Christmas cards do you find yourself cringing in despair? Have you experienced the nightmare of ADDer Christmas card anguish? Would you like to spend a holiday WITHOUT all the wasted time, energy, frustrations and hassles? If so, your friendly ADDer Holiday Helper is here to share how this year you can enjoy the "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS!"

As your friendly ADDer Holiday Helper, I have literally lightened up your burden by simplifying the holiday tradition of sending out Christmas cards. This easy method includes "3" creative options for you to choose your own personal "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS." Read each option and choose your favorite!

A) THE ORGANIZATIONALLY CHALLENGED ADDer: If organization is not your niche, NO PROBLEM! Here is your "cheat sheet" with a list of all the necessary items and a simple guide to help you stay organized to successfully complete your Christmas cards with NO HASSLES:

1) Holiday Christmas Cards/Envelopes
2) Pens (Hint: Keep a few near by in case you run out of ink!)
3) Stamps (Hint: Depending on how many cards you send will determine the amount of stamps needed.)
4) Address Book
5) List of everyone you are sending a card to. (Hint: Consider limiting the cards to keep this simple.)
6) Damp Sponge (So you do not have to lick every single envelope!)

Once you gather all of these items, place them into a shoe box, shopping bag or a rubber made container. The organizational idea is to keep all of these items TOGETHER in one location so you will have everything you need when you sit down to fill out each card. NOTE: Please keep all items inside the box, bag or container.

Next, we will FOCUS on ONE Christmas card PER DAY for the month of November. If you begin doing this NOW, you will have at least "25" days, which equals "25" Christmas cards COMPLETED by the end of November! What an accomplishment this will be for you! The "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS" will literally make your Christmas so much easier!

*Holiday Tip: If you have more than 25 cards to mail, you may need to consider shortening your list or allow yourself 1 - 2 weeks in December to complete one card per day to mail your cards on time.

B) THE HIGHLY DISTRACTED ADDer: If distraction is a challenge for you, here is a simple and easy method to maintain attention long enough to fill out your Christmas cards. Here is your "cheat sheet" with a list of all the important guidelines to help you stay on task to successfully complete your Christmas cards with NO HASSLES:

1) Shut off your cell phone or take your telephone off the hook. (Holiday Tip: Keep your attention focused on the cards and not on chatting, the phone must be off limits to maintain complete attention.)

2) Prepare coffee/tea/ice water/beverage in advance. Whatever choice of beverage that you prefer, stock up on the beverage in advance. (Holiday Tip: Keep your attention focused on the cards and do NOT leave your home to run to the nearest Starbucks or to buy more pepsi.)

3) Turn your television off to prevent any possible distractions. (Holiday Tip: If you work better with "white noise" consider using the sound of a fan or a CD of soothing ocean waves to help you stay on task.)

4) Eat BEFORE you plan on filling out your cards. (Holiday Tip: Trust me on this one, you do NOT want smudges of chocolate, peanut butter & jelly or little crumbs landing on your Christmas cards!)

5) Shut your computer off BEFORE you plan on filling out your cards. (Holiday Tip: Your focus must stay on your Christmas cards. Therefore, using the computer is OFF LIMITS because it will pose a challenge in tempting you to become highly distracted.)

6) If you have pets, children or noisy family members who live with you, I highly recommend hibernating in a private room alone with the door locked. I am not kidding! (Holiday Tip: Trust me on this one because I have 3 noisy ADDer kids, 1 noisy lab and 1 wicked cat!)

7) Keep a time clock with a buzzer on the table where you are working. (Holiday Tip: The purpose of the timer is to keep you on task, help you maintain your attention and remind you to get back to work!)

If you follow my simple guideline up above, I sincerely believe that you will succeed in maintaining your attention long enough to complete one Christmas card per day for 25 days in November. Here are the items to gather BEFORE you begin filling out your "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS:"

1) Holiday Christmas Cards/Envelopes
2) Pens (Hint: Keep a few near by in case you run out of ink!)
3) Stamps (Hint: Depending on how many cards you send will determine the amount of stamps needed.)
4) Address Book

C) THE HYPERACTIVE & IMPULSIVE ADDer: If you are bouncing off the walls and very impulsive, hold onto your hat because we are going to mellow out and stay focused to accomplish the "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS!" Here is your "cheat sheet" to simplify how to prevent hyperactive and impulsive behavior:

1) NO CAFFEINE, including all chocolate, tea & coffee. (Holiday Tip: By eliminating caffeine, you will have much better chances of staying calm and attentive.)

2) SHUT OFF THE COMPUTER, CELL PHONE, IPOD and TV. (Holiday Tip: Trust me on this one, your attention MUST stay on the Christmas cards WITHOUT any distractions or possible reasons to behave impulsively.)

3) HIRE AN ADHD COACH or RECRUIT AN ADHD MENTOR. (Holiday Tip: Drastic situations call for drastic measures! If you consider yourself highly hyperactive and extremely impulsive, it will be mandatory to hire an ADHD Coach or recruit a dependable mentor to guarantee to keep you on task to complete your Christmas cards without any hassles.)

4) If you take stimulant medication, please remember to take your medicine on time and take it BEFORE you plan on filling out your Christmas cards. (Holiday Tip: Stimulant medication may be the key to keeping you on task to reduce hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors.)

5) To maintain a calm, relaxing and soothing environment, I highly recommend listening to soft "chill out" music, such as gentle ocean waves, rhythmic guitar or the sound of rain. (Holiday Tip: Choose in advance the style of relaxing music that you enjoy.)

6) If you have pets, children or noisy family members who live with you, I highly recommend hibernating in a private room with your ADHD Coach/Mentor with the door locked. I am not kidding! (Holiday Tip: Trust me on this one because I have 3 noisy ADDer kids, 1 noisy lab and 1 wicked cat!)

If you follow my simple guideline up above, I sincerely believe that you will succeed in maintaining calm & attentive behavior long enough to complete one Christmas card per day for 25 days in November. Here are the items to gather BEFORE you begin filling out your "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS:"

What an accomplishment this will be for you! With the help of an ADHD Coach/Mentor to keep you on task, you will most certainly reach your Christmas card goals this year! The "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS" will literally make your holiday shine brighter!

*(Holiday Tip: ABSOLUTELY NO IMPULSIVE CHANGES IN YOUR CHRISTMAS CARD LIST! Please do not add any new individuals to your list once it is prepared and confirmed with your ADHD Coach/Mentor. However, with the professional advice of your ADHD Coach/Mentor, you may reduce your Christmas card list to simplify this project.)

Best wishes for successfully keeping organized, maintaining your attention, reducing hyperactivity, limiting impulsive behavior and completing the "NO HASSLE CHRISTMAS CARDS!"

Warmly,
Your Friendly ADDer Holiday Helper

Bryan, I understand how you feel and I think that each individual, with ADD/ADHD or not, needs to consider what works best for them. If simply not sending Christmas cards works best for you, go for it!

I do not consider you or anyone a scrooge for skipping the whole frustrating Christmas card drama. As far as I am concerned, people should not have to feel obligated to send cards. It puts so much unnecessary pressure, stress, guilt, anger and tension into lives during an extremely stressful time of the year.

Holidays need to be SIMPLIFIED & more ENJOYABLE, rather than rushed, having to stand in long lines or having to deal with ruthless people who freak out over someone grabbing the last Barbie doll on the shelf!

Whoa Dana! No way! Uh-uh! I do not send Christmas Cards, ever. Ask my family, I won't do it. If I do it once, no, won't even do it once. A phone call and best wishes, that's my motto. The problem is that when you do it once, then it is expected the next year and then the next and then I feel guilty when I forget.... no, nobody receives Christmas cards from me. Now, anyone that doesn't have ADHD might read this and think, wow, Bryan is a scrooge! But, those who have ADHD will probably thinking... hrmmmm... why do I send those things anyway?!? My Gosh, what’s all involved! I think Christmas Cards are a nice idea, but as ideas go, it’s not a realistic one for an ADDer like myself… then you get the one’s who say, hey you sent so and so a card, why didn’t I get one? No thanks! I have enough difficulty sending out the contest winner’s book each month. lol (Yes, I send it out… eventually)
